It has been a while since the last post, so here is an update about what is happening with UER.

Mirrors

After some more problems with the torrents hopefully our download issued are resolved.
The nice people at the OSU Open Source Lab are mirroring the UER ISO, and we are trying to add some more mirrors. Links to the ISO are on the Getting Started Page.

Arduino

There is now a Arduino package for version 0018 of the Ardunio software.

Survey

We have a survey to find what user want from future releases of UER. Please take the time to fill it in, you will find it here.

Lucid Plans

We are developing plans for the Lucid release, which are available via launchpad Blueprints.

Getting Involoved

If you would like to contribute to UER please see the Get Involved page. All contribution are greatly appreciated.

It’s currently been just over 2 days since the UER LiveDVD was launched. In that time there has been several hundred downloads of the 900MB image. The ISO was stored in two places on a server and on Amazon’s S3 service, with downloads being split between the two.

Since the LiveDVD release the server has almost reached its monthly bandwidth limit and the S3 service is becoming very costly. Quite simply we didn’t expect so many downloads and so didn’t put the necessary infrastructure in place.

Over the next few days we will be working to find mirrors for the ISOs and to set up a torrent. If you can help please contact us.

If you have Ubuntu installed you can set up the UER PPA as described in the Getting Started Page.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience, it seems we scratched many peoples itch, we hope to get things sorted soon.

About Ubuntu Electronics Remix

Ubuntu Electronics Remix (UER) is a new Ubuntu derivative with electronics applications included by default. The aim is to make using Ubuntu for electronics as easy as possible.

Why start the UER project

Ubuntu includes many good electronics applications which are not included by default and are in the Universe repository. Some of these are old versions and need updating. Also, there are many good articles on how to get started with various application on the web, but finding these can be difficult, require visiting several sites and may not be Ubuntu specific.

UER aims

UER aims to:

To provide a LiveDVD of Ubuntu with electronics applications included by default.

To Promote the use of Ubuntu and open Source software for electronics.

To help keep Ubuntu electronics packages upto date.

To provide easy getting started guides for electronics application.

What UER is not about

UER aims to work with current up stream projects and not to duplicate their work. UER getting started guides are about how to get application installed on Ubuntu and a very simple example of using them to check the applications are working, not to replace upstream documentation and tutorials.

UER is not aimed at providing technical tutorials and help, many websites already do this, and we will link to them.

Replacing up stream bug tracking / development work. Users are encouraged to contact upstream project with bugs and ideas.

How to help

If you want to get involved add your details to the wiki page have a look at UER launchpad page and follow UER group on identi.ca. If there is a task you would like to do listed on the wiki assign yourself to to it. We will be having a meeting to plan what we are going to do next in the next few weeks on IRC.
